Westbrook officials monitor water levels after large landslide blocks Presumpscot River

WESTBROOK, Maine (WGAN) Officials in Westbrook are monitoring water levels after a large landslide completely blocked the Presumpscot River Wednesday.

It happened directly behind Les Wilson & Sons Excavators on Warren Avenue.

The Portland Press Herald writes that it was reported Wednesday morning after people saw trees moving on the river’s forested bank.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch. It was lifted around 10 p.m. Wednesday, but the weather service said there was still a small chance that waters could rapidly rise again.

The mayor declared a State of Emergency, and an emergency operations center was established.

The city on Wednesday was working with the Maine DEP, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and dam engineers from the Sappi mill.

Crews were removing debris from the river Thursday and city leaders told resident to avoid the area.
