Westbrook Residents Should Beware of a Phone Scam

Police in Westbrook are warning elderly residents of a phone scam involving gift cards.

The Portland Press Herald reports the scammer claims to be from the Internal Revenue Service and demands that thousands of dollars in gift cards be mailed to the IRS.

According to Westbrook Police, thousands of dollars in gift cards were sold to elderly customers at Hannaford and Family Dollar on Friday.

Residents are encouraged to contact police should they receive a phone call from someone demanding purchases of gift cards.
