The White House appears to be floating the idea of finding backup candidates in the event that Republican Senator Susan Collins does not launch a bid for re-election.

Politico reports there’s no discussion about pushing Collins out, but an anonymous source says President Trump would love to see a “better option” to one of his biggest GOP critics.

Collins has not formally launched a campaign but has said she plans to run again and has been raising money.

Democrats are targeting Collins seat in their efforts to retake the senate next year.

Recent polling has shown Collins with approval ratings in Maine as low as 14 percent, although she easily won a third term in the Senate with deep negative approval ratings in 2020. She is the only New England Republican in the Senate and is the only Maine Republican in Congress in a state Democrat Kamala Harris won in the last presidential election.

Collins is also a moderate Republican who has been at odds with the Trump administration’s recent priorities. She voted against Trump’s massive “Big Beautiful Bill” spending package. Collins has also voted against a $9 billion rescission bill pushed by the Trump administration this week
