Winter cold snap results in nearly non-existent peach harvest in Maine


It’s been a bad year for peaches in Maine, where a cold spell over the winter resulted in a total loss of the crop.

According to the Portland Press Herald, peach crops in Maine are considered a risky investment because their growth is sensitive to colder temperatures. However, a cold snap in February resulted in total crop failure this summer.

Ranae Moran, professor of pomology at University of Maine, says there are virtually no peaches for sale from Maine farmers markets and farm stands this summer.

Moran says peach crops in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, New York and parts of Connecticut suffered similar fates as a result of the same cold snap.
