PORTLAND (WGME) — Portland police say they are trying to identify a man who reportedly harassed a woman and damaged her vehicle because she is Asian.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. on Monday.

Police say the victim reported that she and her children were sitting in her vehicle near 471 Forest Avenue when an “agitated white male, believed to be in his 40s, made eye contact with her and started yelling at her to ‘go back to where she came from.’”

According to police, as the victim tried to move her vehicle to create distance between her and the suspect, he kicked her driver side mirror, snapping it from its bracket and piercing a hole in the frame.

CBS-13 also reports the victim reported that she has previously seen the suspect frequently walking along Forest Avenue. The Portland Police Department says it is investigating the incident as a hate crime and will coordinate with the Maine Attorney General’s Office.

No other information has been released at this time.

If anyone has any information about this incident, please call Portland police at (207) 874-8575.
