Amid the Coronavirus outbreak, the Town of York has closed its popular beaches.

Town Manager Stephen Burns tells the Portland Press Herald that too many people were congregating at the beaches, and that’s why he decided to close them.

Health officials say getting outdoors is a good idea, but amid the outbreak, they continue to urge Mainers to stay at least six feet away from each other.

Town leaders say people gathering outside in the same place defeats the purpose of social distancing, and increases the risk of community transmission in beachfront communities.
