AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)   A proposal to afford Maine’s youngest hunters their own autumn day to hunt turkeys appears to have a good chance of passing the state’s legislature.

Republican Rep. William Tuell of East Machias made the proposal, which would give young hunters a special day in fall to pursue turkeys, similar to the day they currently have for deer. Tuell’s bill received the approval of a legislative committee in February.

Tuell says it’s likely the youth turkey day would take place in September, though he initially proposed it for around Thanksgiving. He’s waiting for the proposal to make it to the floor of the Maine House of Representatives.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife has said it’s “supportive of efforts that would increase participation in turkey hunting.” The spring hunt starts in late April.
