Founded in 1980, Portland Ballet is Maine’s professional ballet company. Under the artistic direction of Nell Shipman, Portland Ballet presents classical and neo-classical story ballets as well as contemporary works, and attracts professional dancers from around the country as well as internationally. Portland Ballet participates in many outreach programs and collaborates with other local (arts) institutions. Our community performances reach over 1,500 local students and residents of retirement communities and disability support homes annually.

Patrick Stewart, the classically trained actor who added Shakespearean gravitas to the "Star Trek" and "X-Men" franchises, has died. He was 86. Stewart died Wednesday in Los Angeles, following "a brief and poignant journey" with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy Body Dementia, spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak said.
