In the first half we speak with Mike Norton with The South Portland Professional Firefighters Local 1476 and their annual event gone virtual, Checking For Charity. Checking For Charity was born out of a love for hockey and a desire to give back to the community. In 2017, two South Portland firefighters hatched up an idea: A charity hockey event with a couple of games and a focus on South Portland. Through the support and hard-work of many firefighters and community members the event has grown and raised over $40,000 in its first three years! This year’s event is going to be live streamed on Sunday March 14th. Everything will be virtual for spectators. Games @ 11:30, 1pm, & 2:30pm. SPHS Alum, Firefighter game, Former Pro Showdown.
In the second half we speak with Ken Janson, longtime Mary’s Walk committee member (since 2001). Ken knew Mary as a Freshmen at Thornton Academy in 1968 when he sat down next to her in French class, which led to a long friendship. Their 23rd event will be held virtually on March 21 and their slogan this year is “Cancer has not stopped, so WE cannot stop”. They continue to promote fundraising and encourage registration to the event to walk or run in your own neighborhoods. Our goal is to continue next year with a live event again!
