A new study backs the expansion of the Amtrak Downeaster passenger rail service to Bangor.

The study released on Thursday by the Rail Passengers Association found the extension would boost the economy, support jobs, and reduce pollution in Maine.

It projected  260,000 new riders in the first year and $61.7 million in annual economic benefits for the state.

The Amtrak Downeaster currently runs from Boston through Portland and terminates in Brunswick at its northern end.

The study analyzes the benefits of extending the service to Lewiston, Winthrop, Waterville, Pittsfield, Bangor, and Orono.

“We’re talking about making it possible for people inside of Maine to make more trips within the state, we’re talking about college students being able to get back to school, there are many people who cannot fly, drive, take buses,” Rail Passengers Association President Jim Matthews said.
