Commissioner Laura Fortman with Maine Department Of Labor gives us an update on Maine’s Unemployment and Workforce.

  • Unemployment Claims Filed
  • Unemployment Benefits

If you received unemployment benefits in 2020, you may be eligible to claim an exemption from both Maine and federal income tax. If you have an annual income of less than $150,000, regardless of filing status, recently enacted legislation exempts up to $10,200 in unemployment benefits from both federal and state income tax for tax year 2020.

To claim the exemption, follow the updated instructions for filing your 2020 federal and Maine individual income tax returns.

For information on filing your federal return, see www.irs.gov.

For more information on the Maine unemployment benefits exemption and filing your Maine return, see www.maine.gov/revenue/taxes/income-estate-tax
