PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Merton “Mert” Henry, a Republican attorney, World War II veteran, political adviser, and Bowdoin College trustee, has died at age 92.
Henry served as chairman of all of Republican Susan Collins’s U.S. Senate campaigns. Long before that, he served as an adviser to the late Republican Sen. Margaret Chase Smith. And he was a trustee when Bowdoin voted to allow women to attend.
Collins said Henry “worked tirelessly for countless civic and philanthropic causes and was a wise counselor” to many. Former U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe and her husband, former Maine Gov. John R. McKernan Jr., called him “a voice of reason and moderation.”
He died Friday night at Maine Medical Center after a brief illness. A memorial service is scheduled for April 14 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Portland.
