Two men from Africa, who live in the U.S., are being held on ICE detainers after being arrested in Bar Harbor.

According to the Bar Harbor Story, police arrested the men who they found with illegal drugs after they refused to leave a hotel at checkout time.

Police say the men have ICE detainers issued for them, and will be held in jail even if they meet bail requirements.

Some cities have been resistant to cooperating with ICE, and the Cumberland County Jail has been criticized for holding a large number of inmates on ICE detainers.

The two men arrested in Bar Harbor, were being held in the Hancock County Jail and had not met bail as of late Wednesday.

The men are listed as Mohamed Eytah, 20, of Collinsville, Illinois, and Cheikh Hmeimed, 25, of Brooklyn, New York. Both are from the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, a country in northwest Africa.

The Bar Harbor Story reports the two fled the Best Western Hotel in Bar Harbor after being told to stay in place when police responded to a complaint they and two other people had refused to leave the hotel at check out time.

Police say they apprehended the men and found prescription oxycodone that one of them had discarded.  They face charges of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, class C and alleged refusing to submit to arrest or detention, class E.

Under the ICE Detainers, they may be held in jail up to 48-hours after their release date.
