Maine State Police troopers responded to Interstate 95 in Scarborough after a car collided with a moose southbound at mile marker 40.
After striking the moose, the car then struck a passing tractor-trailer.
A press release Wednesday morning from Maine State Police said Jordan Andujar, 23, of Windham was behind the wheel of the vehicle that struck the moose, and the accident occured just before 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
Andujar and the two others in the car were transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-life-threatening injuries.
The release made no mention of any injuries that may have been suffered by the tractor-trailer driver.
The moose died after being struck by the vehicle and was removed from the road by the Maine Turnpike Authority.
According to the Maine Dept. of Transportation, vehicle-moose collisions peak in May and June, and they increase dramatically during those months.
Moose are most active at dawn and dusk.
The release said drivers should be especially alert after sunset because dark colored animals can be very hard to see until they are right in front of your headlights and your vehicle.
