A 4-year-old girl is in critical condition after a drowning incident at the Hampton Inn Hotel in Kennebunk Saturday morning.

Kennebunk Fire Rescue Chief Justin Cooper and off-duty firefighter Joshua McCann arrived at the scene at the hotel on Independence Drive at about 9:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a child not breathing.

Firefighters say they provided extensive resuscitation efforts before the girl was taken by ambulance to MaineHealth in Biddeford.

She was then flown by medical helicopter to MaineHealth in Portland where she remains in critical condition. First responders say she suffered a heart attack.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

Kennebunk Fire Rescue advised the public to take caution with a list of pool and water safety reminders.
