Swimming is allowed once again at Reid State Park in Georgetown after a shark sighting closed down activity Thursday afternoon.

The town advised residents and visitors to be safe and alert in the meantime.

Swimming along the coast in Reid Park was closed off for about two hours before water activity was once again allowed.

Thursday marked the second time in the past week that a shark sighting has closed Reid State Park to swimming.

Beaches at Popham Beach State Park and Fort Popham were closed early last week after what was believed to have been a shark fin spotted in the water.

Shark sightings are increasingly common along the Maine coast due to a growing seal population.
