Firefighters say a 71-year-old man is dead from a fire in Biddeford Monday afternoon.

They say the fire broke out around 3 p.m. at a building on Alfred Street at the intersection of Alfred Street and Ray Street, where flames were coming from a second-floor apartment over a two-car garage.

Firefighters say they found the man unconscious during a search of the building afterwards, and efforts to revive him were not successful.

The building received extensive fire and smoke damage and will be uninhabitable. The fire was brought under control in about an hour.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the State of Maine Fire Marshal’s office and the cause of death is under investigation by the Biddeford Police Department.
