Androscoggin River expected to reach record levels as residents evacuate

Residents in the Lewiston-Auburn area near the Androscoggin River started evacuating their homes Tuesday as floodwaters continued to rise in the wake of Monday’s devastating rain and wind storm.

Lewiston city officials asked residents to leave their homes by 5 p.m. Tuesdsay.

The order was put into effect for streets near the river including Switzerland Road, Tall Pines Drive, Oxford Street and Lincoln Drive. That full list is available here.

City officials say the evacuation was expected to last until noon on Wednesday.

In Auburn, residents along the river were also urged to evacuate, with the river expected to reach record levels by noon on Wednesday.
