Arrest made in Portland shooting that left 1 dead, 3 injured

The suspect involved in a deadly shooting last week in Portland is now in custody.

54-old Susan McHugh of Gray died of her injuries in the hospital after the shooting on Forest Avenue last Tuesday night.

On Friday, Maine’s Department of Public Safety said a warrant was issued for the suspect, forty-seven-year-old Aaron Karp of Naples. He was arrested and brought to Cumberland County Jail, where he’s being held without bail on a murder charge.

Three other people were injured in the shooting. They’ve since been treated and released from the hospital.

No other arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

In a statement, Portland Police Chief Mark Dubois addressed a lack of details in the immediate wake of the shooting:

“I also want to acknowledge the frustration many have felt with a perceived lack of transparency when it comes to this case,” said Dubois. “As I’ve mentioned before, our top priority in every case is to make sure the individuals responsible are brought to justice. At times, this includes not providing details to the public that some may seem benign, but in the reality of the case, are very much not benign. We appreciate everyone’s understanding when it comes to this matter. I also want to thank all of the agencies that have assisted us at the scene that night as well as with the ensuing investigation.”
