An assault suspect was shot and killed by police officers in Portland Sunday night, police say.

In a press release Monday morning, the Portland Police Dept. said officers responded just before midnight to reports of an aggravated assault in which a handgun was displayed.

Police say the suspect, 42-year-old Kyle Desmarais, fled in a vehicle before officers arrived, but he was spotted traveling south on Interstate 295.

Officers initiated a traffic stop on the Exit 2 off-ramp, and police say the suspect exited the vehicle and pointed a gun at responding officers.

Police say Desmarais was shot when he exchanged gunfire with two officers.

Police administered first aid, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers who fired shots will be on administrative leave while the Maine Attorney General’s Office investigates the shooting, standard procedure for police-involved shootings in Maine.
