Maine Firefighter Killed While Battling Blaze In Berwick

BERWICK, Maine (WGAN) The Maine State Fire Marshal says one firefighter was killed in an apartment fire in Berwick on Friday morning.

Captain Joel Barnes of the Berwick Fire Department is one of five firefighters who were hospitalized following the fire. State Fire Marshal Joe Thomas says Barnes succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

All of the residents of the building got out safely, and the four other firefighters have since been released from the hospital.

The fire was reported shortly before 11 a.m. and drew between 50 and 75 firefighters from 12 departments in Maine and New Hampshire. The roof collapsed.
