An Auburn man was arrested Friday after allegedly attempting to import over $3 million worth of fentanyl into Maine.

Auburn police say they charged 41-year-old Jeremy Mercier with aggravated importing and trafficking of drugs.

According to CBS 13, a large wooden crate addressed to Mercier from the state of Arizona was delivered to a local restaurant Friday. Workers at the restaurant opened the crate expecting a shipment of mugs but instead found 30 pounds of what police have discovered to be fentanyl.

According to the Bangor Daily News, Mercier, who does not work at the restaurant, was arrested when he stopped by looking for the crate.

Police also seized $2,780 in suspected drug money from Mercier upon his arrest.

Mercier was previously convicted for cocaine trafficking in 2007 and is being held at the Androscoggin County Jail without bail.
