Jacob Diaz, a 24-year-old man from Augusta, Maine, was arrested again on Monday and charged with criminal speeding and violating conditions of release. Diaz is already facing manslaughter and aggravated driving to endanger charges in connection with a fatal crash on Route 4 in Turner on December 11, 2022, that killed 79-year-old Carol Ivers of Fayette.
According to the Sun Journal, Diaz was allegedly racing another car and going more than 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash. Ivers had been delivering Christmas gifts when her car was hit. The second driver, 34-year-old Curtis Randy Fogg, also faces manslaughter and five other charges.
Diaz was originally being held on $100,000 bail, but in April a judge lowered his bail to $10,000 cash. He was allowed to continue driving to work and other specific destinations. However, his new arrest has resulted in his bail being revoked and he is now being held without bail at the Androscoggin County Jail.
The news of Diaz’s second arrest has shocked and angered the community. Many people are questioning why he was allowed to continue driving while facing such serious charges. The case is a reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the devastating consequences it can have.
