The town of Gray is asking residents to be vigilant about rabies after a rabid raccoon was found dead last month.

Gray Fire and Rescue says the animal was found on Weymouth Road on Feb. 22. Testing at the Maine CDC in Augusta confirmed that it was rabid.

Officials are asking residents to vaccinate their pets and license their dogs. They also remind everyone to monitor pets when they’re outdoors and don’t allow dogs to roam freely outside.

Anyone who spots a wild or domestic animal acting strangely is urged to contact their local Animal Control.
