Mount Desert Hospital in Bar Harbor is the latest Maine hospital to announce plans to close its birthing unit.

The hospital announced Thursday that it will stop delivering babies on July 1, citing a drop in birth rates in the area and declining state and federal reimbursements.

The hospital said there have been just nine births there so far this year, and 32 births last year.

MDI Hospital President Chrissi Maguire says they’ll double the size of their emergency department, including a room for emergency births, and will continue offering other services for expectant mothers.
