Bates College is on lockdown following a surge in coronavirus cases on campus that the school blames on recent gatherings.
On Monday, the school was monitoring 49 cases among students, in addition to 129 close contacts who are in quarantine.
The lockdown means students are being told to stay on campus and in their rooms, except to get food, go to the bathroom, exercise outdoors, or get a COVID-19 test. The lockdown is expected to last until at least Sunday, April 11th.
School officials say three social gatherings that took place the last weekend in March may be to blame for the increase in cases on campus.
