Bicyclist struck by vehicle in Rumford killed; driver charged

RUMFORD, Maine (WGAN) Police say a woman on a bicycle was killed when a vehicle struck her in Rumford.

The accident happened on Route 2 Thursday morning.

Police say 37-year-old Alger M. Aleck of Mexico, Maine was behind the wheel when he struck the bicyclist. Aleck was charged with manslaughter and criminal operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs which caused a death.

Police are withholding the victim’s name as they notify the family.

“This is a tragedy and my heart goes out to the victim’s family”, said Rumford Chief Tony Milligan. “With temperatures on the rise and a holiday weekend approaching, more and more pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles will be sharing the roads. Motorists should remain attentive and drive with due care to avoid further tragedies.”

Aleck is being held on $15,000 cash bail at Oxford County Jail.
