The Biddeford City Council has unanimously approved an ordinance limiting cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The ordinance city blocks employees interacting with federal agencies, including ICE, or from requesting information about citizenship or immigration status.

It comes after an incident in July, when an ICE agent fatally shot Biddeford resident Johan Sebastian Durán Guerrero, who was a Colombian immigrant.

The ordinance is modeled after similar ones in Portland and Lewiston.  It does not prevent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from carrying out operations in Biddeford.

The ordinance will take effect on Nov. 19, 30 days after its approval.
