A pair of Biddeford men who were convicted of racially motivated hate crimes have been ordered to pay more than $1 million in damages to one of their victims.

Maurice Diggins and Dusty Leo were convicted in 2020 after attacking two black men while shouting racial slurs in separate incidents in 2018.

One victim filed a civil suit to cover medical expenses.

According to CBS 13, the men have been ordered to pay $700,000 in punitive damages and $500,000 in compensatory damages.

The Portland Press Herald reports that the judge acknowledged that Diggins and Leo likely don’t have $1 million, so they’ll determine what assets the men have and what can be seized to make up for the payments.
