AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Maine lawmakers have passed a marijuana reform bill that will allow medical marijuana caregivers to expand their businesses under increased oversight.

The bill passed by the Legislature Tuesday will require caregivers, the persons who supply marijuana to qualified patients, to receive explicit approval from their towns before opening shops at their homes and allows for unannounced inspections. The Portland Press Herald reports the bill lets caregivers hire more than one employee and allows treatment of any number of patients from 30 mature pot plants.

Caregivers are technically limited to treat five patients at a given time under current law. Caregiver proponent group Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine supported the bill, saying it supports greater patient access and safety.

The bill heads to Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s desk for review.
