Young Mainers may be required to obtain boating licenses under new legislation.
According to the Portland Press Herald, the proposed bill would require boaters under the age of 25 to pass an education and safety course before January of 2024 to operate on Maine’s lakes and rivers.
The course would be a requirement for those Mainers looking to operate a boat of 25 horsepower or more, or personal watercraft like Jet Skis.
According to data collected by the U.S. Coast Guard, those under 25 aren’t the ones getting in the most boating accidents or causing the most fatalities. However, Rep. Jessica Fay, who sponsored the bill, says that applying the law to children and young adults would help set an example for boaters of all ages.
The law only impacts boaters in inland waters, but it lays out a plan to form a stakeholder group that would consider how best to apply it to boating in tidal waters.
The bill faces one final vote in the Maine Legislature before it goes to Gov. Janet Mills’ desk.
