Black ice on 1-95 causes 20 crashes and slide offs Saturday

Police temporarily shut down sections of I-95 Saturday afternoon after black ice caused 20 crashes and slide offs.

The Maine State Police report that at around 12:30 p.m., troopers responded to eight crashes and slide offs north of Waterville between mile markers 174 and 159 in the southbound lane. Only minor injuries were reported despite a rollover crash and tractor trailer that slid sideways across the interstate.

Another 12 crashes and slide offs occurred around mile marker 188 in Bangor. One person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The interstate has since been reopened.
