(WGAN) Parts of Maine are expected to get hit with more than a foot of snow during a nor’easter that is expected to hammer the state Saturday.
The National Weather Service office in Gray has issued a blizzard warning from 7 a.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. on Sunday.
The heaviest snow is expected to come down along the coast.
The agency says snow will come down quickly with snowfall rates of one to three inches an hour expected at times.
Forecasters say gusts could potentially surpass 50 mph.
The gusts could be strong enough to topple trees and bring down branches and power lines, potentially leading to widespread power outages.
Central Maine Power says crews will be ready to restore service when the conditions are safe.
Blowing and drifting snow means whiteout conditions possible.
The weather service said driving could be difficult to near impossible at times during the storm.
Parking bans have been issued in a number of towns and cities, and the Portland Jetport says there will be just one flight all day Saturday, a Delta departure to Atlanta at 7 a.m.
Jetport officials say all other arrivals and departures have been cancelled, and they hope to resume normal operations sometime Sunday morning.
Emergency officials are urging residents to be prepared for the storm by buying enough groceries to get through the weekend before the snow comes down. If needed, prescription medications should also be picked up ahead of the storm.
Mainers are also urged to charge their cellphones and make sure flashlights have fresh batteries.
