Body of missing NH man recovered 12 miles from empty kayak

OGUNQUIT, Maine (AP) The body of a missing kayaker from New Hampshire has been recovered by the Maine Marine Patrol.

The search began Sunday for Donald Vardell, Jr., 53, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, after his overturned kayak was discovered Sunday near Wood Island at the mouth of the Piscataqua River.

Vardell’s body was found in the ocean late Tuesday morning by a fisherman 3 miles east of Ogunquit and approximately 12 miles from his kayak.

The Maine Marine Patrol recovered the body; the Portsmouth Police Department will conduct the investigation into the death.
