Car Plunges Into Lake, Man Escapes

RAYMOND, Maine (AP) Police say a man narrowly escaped from a car that went off a ferry in Maine and into a lake.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says 64-year-old Dennis Feeney drove his 2016 Mercedes-Benz onto the Frye Island ferry Monday night and failed to put the vehicle in park.

The car went off the ferry and into Sebago Lake, and police say Feeney escaped the car as it sank. His two dogs inside the vehicle did not survive.

Feeney was not seriously injured.

Police Capt. Scott Stewart says officials will try to recover the vehicle from the lake Tuesday, as it is the source of drinking water for the Portland area.

An investigation is ongoing.
