CDC Issues Warning About Salmonella Outbreak From Flocks

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a warning about salmonella connected to chickens and ducks in backyard flocks across the country.

The Portland Press Herald reports 212 cases have been reported, including one in Maine. According to the CDC, 34 people have been hospitalized.

Officials say multiple types of salmonella have been identified. The CDC is working with state officials to investigate the outbreak.

People can contract salmonella by coming into contact with live poultry or entering their environment. Officials say infected birds may appear healthy.

The CDC says people should wash their hands after touching live poultry.
