A report from the state Child Welfare Services Ombudsman shows ongoing and “significant” struggles in Maine’s child welfare system, which are negatively impacting child safety.
The report sent to Governor Janet Mills Thursday says there’s enormous pressure on staff, due in part to a lack of mental and behavioral health services for children.
The report also says the state agency responsible for child welfare has been receptive to recommendations, but improvements take time.
The report looked at 80 cases, 44 of which had “substantial” issues.
The cases included a child who was hospitalized for severe malnutrition 44 days after an initial caseworker report.
Office of Child and Family Services Director Bobbi Johnson said she agreed with most of the findings in the report.
Speaking with our info partners at CBS 13 news on Friday, Johnson said training supervisors is badly needed. They’ve hired eight so far.
