PORTLAND, Maine (Portland Press Herald) A proposal in Portland to prohibit landlords from charging prospective tenants application fees now seems unlikely to be approved by city councilors.

The housing committee reviewed the plan for the first time on Wednesday. The Portland Press Herald reports two of the three members on the committee oppose it. Despite the lack of support, a public hearing has been scheduled for April.

Supporters say application fees and other charges increase the cost of apartment hunting, and present a significant barrier to low-income people in need of housing.
