The U.S. Coast Guard says it’s seeking information about last weekend’s search off the coast of maine for a missing man and three children.

The man made a mayday call Saturday morning, saying his boat had capsized miles off Kennebunkport.

The coast guard spent 22 hours searching for the man and three children, but they were never found and no missing person’s reports were filed.

The Coast Guard now wonders if the distress call was a hoax.

“We are asking for the public’s assistance in determining the source of the calls and the nature of the distress,” Capt. Brian Lefebvre, Coast Guard Sector Northern New England commander, said in a Tuesday news release. “Additional information may aid in our closure of the case and offer a degree of finality to the many rescuers who dedicated their time and effort toward this search effort.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Coast Guard Sector Northern New England in Portland at 207-741-5478.
