PORTLAND, Maine (AP)   U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ office says she remains “confident” that President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will get behind two health care bills the GOP senator wants as part of her support for the Republican tax overhaul.

Democrats are criticizing Collins’ initial vote on the tax bill and say Collins traded her support for concessions that Republicans will block. But Collins spokeswoman Annie Clark said the senator is confident Congress will pass the health care bills before year’s end.

Despite non-partisan analyses to the contrary, Collins claims the tax bill will spur economic growth that could lower the nation’s debt.

The Senate approved its version of tax legislation on a 51-49 vote Saturday. GOP leaders are intent on delivering a final package to Trump by Christmas.
