SCARBOROUGH (WGME) – A summertime game has taken on a whole new meaning for one group.
Maineiacs Cornhole summer series held their latest tournament at Throttle Car Club in Scarborough Saturday.
Paired with an on-going car show, they aimed to raise money for Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
“Most of us have kids, I do softball on the side with my daughter. It hits home, you know there’s kids that need help, families that need support,” said John Clark, an organizer for Maineiacs Cornhole.
“It truly just means the world to us,” said Grace Jandro of Maine Children’s Cancer Program. “As were able to have these in-person events again, it’s just incredible to see how the community is rallying around our patients and families.”
Stories of survivors encourage donations to help their efforts of cancer care and research.
Like 12-year-old Cameron, a lover of baseball who is still in his fight against Leukemia.
“Whether it’s $10 raised, $100 or $1000, truly every dollar makes such a difference for the work that we do,” said Jandro.
Fighting cancer in kids has become a rallying call for Maineiacs Cornhole.
Earlier this year they helped 17-year-old Miki Castrucci of Gray battle Leukemia by raising thousands of dollars.
“Where there is a cause that’s worthy, the people come out for it,” said Clark. “So far it’s been three years we’ve been doing this and probably raised like $150,000.”
“As an individual you can donate only so much,” said Jaime Nonni of Throttle Car Club. “But when you take a collective group of people like this and bring them together, you can make a pretty big impact.”
