AUGUSTA (WGME) — Twenty-nine new cases of coronavirus were reported Saturday by the Maine Center for Disease Control, pushing the total to 1,152, while one new death was also reported.
Saturday’s update included a 32-case jump in the number of Maine residents who have recovered and a decrease in the number of people currently hospitalized.
A Waldo County woman in her 80s became the 56th victim from COVID-19, according to the Maine CDC, who added, “Please note that COVID-related deaths reflect the number of Maine residents who’ve tested positive for COVID-19 who have died. Please do not assume that COVID-19 is the primary cause of death in each of these cases.”
Recovery numbers continue to improve, moving up to 689 people. Mainers hospitalized by the virus dropped by one to 36 with two more patients in critical care and one more on a ventilator.
The total number of hospitalizations since coronavirus came to Maine is now 181, an increase of four.
Cumberland County has 23 of the 29 new cases for a total of 527 and 22 of new recovered Mainers for a total of 315.
Maine continues to see more cases and more recoveries as the debate rages over how fast to reopen the state’s economy.
Another protest is taking place in Augusta today calling for a faster reopening than outlined by Gov. Janet Mills, with Sunday River Brewing’s Rick Savage in attendance.
Sunday River Brewing opened to its dine-in restaurant Friday, drawing hundreds of customers and prompted the state to take its licenses.
It is closed for the time being, with two GoFundMe accounts accepting money in support of Savage.
CBS 13’s Karah Brackin is covering today’s rally and will have the latest tonight at 6 p.m.
Another restaurant-related business have also opened. Bald Mountain Camps Resort posted messages and a video on Facebook ahead its opening Friday afternoon, with plans to do the same on Saturday.
