Crash on I-295 in Gardiner leaves maintenance truck driver with minor injuries


A crash involving a tanker truck hauling sewage and a road maintenance truck that shut down I-295 in West Gardiner is under investigation.

The crash happened at mile 49 around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon.

The tanker truck being driven by 61-year-old Allen Hewett of Sidney struck a maintenance truck where crews were picking up cones at a lane closure, spilling landfill leachate, or “dirty water.”

The driver of the maintenance truck was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Hewett was issued a citation for failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle and failing to yield to a highway maintenance vehicle.
