A Bangor elementary school and a middle school in Cumberland are the best K-8 schools in the state, according to new rankings released by U.S. News & World Report.

The publication released its list Tuesday of more than 80,000 elementary and middle public schools across the country. The rankings are based on state test results and student performance. The data used was collected in the school year preceding the pandemic.

Fruit Street School in Bangor was ranked the best elementary school in the state, and Greely Middle School in Cumberland was ranked the best middle school.

Longfellow Elementary in Portland was ranked as the second-best elementary school, with Falmouth middle school ranking second on its respective list.
