PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Democratic candidate for district attorney in Maine’s Cumberland County has dropped out amid allegations of sexual misconduct at a previous employer.

Jon Gale said he decided to abandon his bid after he and his family discussed the situation and “decided we cannot bear this stress.” His announcement came after the Maine Democratic Party called for him to drop out of the face because of the allegations made by co-workers at Unum.

In a statement, Gale acknowledged to having extramarital affairs, but denied victimizing anyone.

He said his wife has forgiven him and that his decision to leave Unum was unrelated to his personal life or any human resources investigation.

Gale’s departure leaves independent Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Sahrbeck as the lone candidate. Republican Randy Bates previously already dropped out.
