BINGHAM, Maine (AP) A Maine school district says it will discipline any students or staff members who participate in a planned school walkout to advocate for gun legislation later this month.

Superintendent Virginia Rebar of Maine School Administrative District 13 made the announcement Wednesday on the district’s website. She referenced the “National School Walkout” scheduled for March 14.

Rebar says students and staff who have differing views from those espoused by walkout organizers would have to have an equal opportunity to express their views or the walkout would be “legally problematic.” She also says students and staff don’t have the “right to disrupt or interrupt the school day for political advocacy.”

Rebar says students or staff who walk out March 14 will be considered absent without permission and “subject to normal disciplinary procedures.”
