AUBURN, Maine (AP) – Police say a dog left in a hot car has been rescued, and the owner is nowhere to be found.

Christal Smith says she called police when she saw an almost-lifeless puppy in a parked car outside a Walmart in Auburn on Sunday.

An Auburn police officer determined the temperature was 103 degrees, even though the windows were cracked. The police officer freed the dog, which was taken to a shelter.

Deputy Police Chief Jason Moen tells the Sun Journal that the car was unregistered, and police were unable to locate the owner of the car or the owner of the dog.

Under Maine law, emergency workers can take reasonable steps to remove an animal from an automobile if the animal’s safety, health or well-being appears to be in danger.
