PORTLAND (WGME) — As former hurricane Dorian continues its path along the east coast, it’s impacting Maine in more ways than one.

In Portland, three cruise ships were diverted to the docks of the Old Port to get out of the way of Dorian’s path.

Some of the passengers aboard said this was the second time they had a run in with the storm.

“We had to divert our original plans because Dorian came to Florida,” passenger Greg Wheler said. “Now it’s all the way up here to visit us again. So, we’ve had two close calls in about seven days.”

At Maine’s beaches, conditions were ideal with surfing.

“We looked at the forecast for like a week and when we saw it was good we decided to come here,” Sophie Thibodeau who drove to Maine from Canada said. “But we actually expected it to be bigger. But it’s still cool.”

While surfers enjoyed the larger than normal waves, rip currents from the storm were a concern along the coast.

As the remnants of Dorian head towards Canada hurricane force winds were still expected.
