BUXTON (WGME)– Buxton Police say they charged 40 people with trespassing over the weekend after they entered  a popular park that had to be closed due an increased disregard for park rules by its visitors.

Pleasant Point Park was closed last week due to reports of people throwing rocks at kayakers, hosting large gatherings, parking dangerously, public intoxication, and excessive littering. The most recent park-cleanup recovering well over 400 pieces of trash in the park.

In addition to the 40 individuals charged with criminal trespassing, another 30-to-40 people were issued warnings. Four underage women were charged with possession of liquor, and three men were charged with drinking in public

Police state that the park’s main entrance is clearly marked as ‘closed’ but that the Saco river entrance’s signage could certainly be improved. Police say that they will continue to patrol the area for people looking to violate the order.

Buxton town leaders state that they will keep the park closed until they can figure out how they can properly curb these problems.
