At Payson Park in Portland more than 80 people picked up their race packets for this year’s virtual kids duathlon on Sunday afternoon, according to CBS13.
The race director Amy Landry said she wasn’t going to let the coronavirus stop her from putting on the race after creating the duathlon three years ago for her daughter.
“Because I’m a triathlete and she was watching me train and there was nothing for kids her age,” Landry said.
The race organizers were handing out medals, bibs, and t-shirts so people can replicate the experience at home and Laundry said she was shocked with the turn out.
“We’ve given them suggested distances, we’ve opened it up to people of all ages, so we have little ones and adults doing it as well,” she said.
Parents told CBS13 that this race came at the perfect time for kids who are looking for things to do while in quarantine.
A portion of the money raised goes toward helping teachers in nearby schools.
“It’s so important that we support our teachers and education we’re just really happy that we have that opportunity,” said Kari Pofahl a mother of two kids in the race.
Landry said they’re expecting to give them about $8,000.
